Retreat to a Space of Your Own
Client: The Long Family
Feng shui is about creating spaces with purpose, reflective of the client’s intentions. To identify those intentions, clients are evaluated. Based on this evaluation, these clients were considered to be total opposites. The key to creating a space that works well for opposites — reflective of intentions of each – requires creating balance. Including all five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) works well.
Taking this project to completion was so much fun! The tour you’re about to take highlights the results. It begins along a gentle meandering pathway that leads guests from the street to the front door. Upon entry, guests hear the gentle sound of a waterfall and see large windows framing beautiful views of the Colorado National Monument. Below the windows sits a built-in gas fireplace surrounded by stone. The floor plan is open and airy. The walls are golden and the furniture is wide, low and soft.
To create balance, all five elements are represented. The WOOD element is represented in the wood flooring, doors, cabinetry and trim throughout. The FIRE element is represented in the fireplace, the candelabra over the dining room table and the blue pendant lights dividing the gathering room and the kitchen. The EARTH element is represented in the golden color of the walls, the pottery and the stone walls. The METAL element is represented in the waterfall’s copper wall and the frames of the tables. The WATER element is represented in the waterfall and the glass table tops. In the end, the elements are well balanced and the client’s intentions are reflected in their surroundings.
In the end, the clients feel this space reflects their intentions. From the granite countertops in the kitchen to the sandstone columns in the bathroom, then they enjoy being surrounded by things they love and feel the comfort of nature’s harmony.
