I grew up on a ranch nearly seven miles from town and three miles from the nearest playmate. So when I became an annoyance at home, my parents would send me down the road to see my grandparents. And, when I became an annoyance to them, my grandfather would tell me to go play in the dirt. My options — hang out with my grandmother making mud pies or go with him to tend the potato patch. My favorite? Making mud pies, of course!
Playing in the dirt is grounding. It feels good!
Plant your own potato patch, take a pottery class, or go for a hike!
Grandma and I would take our pie tins from the kitchen, gather up some dirt from the irrigation ditch, add a few rocks from the driveway, a little straw from the haystack, mix in a little water and pour the mixture into our empty pie tins. Then we’d set the tins along the patio, in full sun, to bake. When they were done, we’d sit and admire our beautiful creations!
Playing in the dirt is grounding. It feels good! Dirt (soil) represents the earth element. Next time you want to feel more grounded or a little calmer – and you don’t want to play – surround yourself with earth tone colors, square shapes or potted plants. On the other hand, if you decide you do want to play, plant your own potato patch, take a pottery class, or go for a hike!
